Quilt Math
You need two fabric squares to make half square triangles 2 at a time!
Use the chart below to determine what size squares you should start with.
So if you want to make 5 inch half square triangle blocks - you should start with two 6 inch fabric squares!
Follow the steps below and when you get the final step you would trim the blocks to 5.5 inch squares.
Then after using a quarter inch seam allowance in your quilt - the finished half square triangle size would be 5 inch.

Step-By-Step Tutorial
Step One - Place Fabrics Together
Step Three - Stitch on Both Sides of the Line
Step Two - Draw Line on Wrong Side of Fabric

Step Four - Cut on the Line

Step Five - Press & Trim

Take your two fabric squares and place them right sides together!
I like to place 2 sewing pins in opposite corners to hold the fabrics in place.
Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner across the wrong side of one of the fabrics!
You can use pencil, pen or hera marker to mark the diagonal line.
Using a quarter inch seam allowance - stitch on both sides of the drawn line!
Make sure your seam allowance is accurate to ensure the block is the correct size.
Cut the square in half following the line - this will become two blocks!
You can use a rotatory cutter or fabric scissors.
Press the seams and then trim the blocks to the finished size + 0.5 inch!
Press your seams open if you want a flat block or press to the dark side.

Tips for Success
Starch & press your fabric squares! Implementing just this one tip will change your accuracy!
Be as accurate as possible in your quarter inch seam allowance.
Use a shorter stitch length - I usually do a 2mm stitch length.
